Located in almost the middle of Athens County, Ohio, nestled in the southeast corner of the Hocking Hills area, Canaan Township is a little gem of beautiful hills and ravines. Hidden natural rock formations and creeks wind through the hills and valleys of the township. The Hocking River and State Route 50/32 run through the middle of the township, and separate the north and south areas of Canaan Township. A small portion of the township is annexed into the City of Athens as well.
Most of Strouds Run State Park lies within Canaan Township. Comprised of 2,606 acres, the park includes Dow Lake. It is a 161 acre lake that provides both recreational opportunity and scenic beauty. The park has miles of walking trails and a large swimming area, as well as a boat ramp for small water craft. There is also a boat and kayak rental service available.
Canaan Township is governed by a three member board of trustees, as well as a fiscal officer. The Board of Trustees meet once a month on the first Monday of the month.
